Over three sessions in April and May 2016, ten pupils from Bigyn Primary School worked with Pip Lewis and Hal Lewis- Norman from spacetocreate on a self-portrait project using photography and pattern making; referencing the fabrics and furnishings in Llanelly House.
The inspiration for the project came from “Pattern Faces ” a series of workshops at Oriel Myrddin Gallery Carmarthen earlier this year, led by Artist Julie Ann Sheridan working with the Young Artists Club.
The project began by pupils exploring several of the rooms in Llanelly House drawing as many patterns as they could find in the fabrics and furnishings. Following this the pupils had individual portrait photographs taken.
In the second session the pupils measured a grid in pencil on tracing paper, which was overlaid onto the printed life size photographic self-portraits taken the previous week. Once the grid was completed, they worked on their portraits with felt pens, using the pattern sheet as guidance drawing a different pattern on each of the squares, starting with the face.
In the final session the pupils continued to work on the pattern portraits, introducing repeated line patterns to outline the features on their faces and develop backgrounds.
